Last month, the BLKOPS Road Show visited Westside High, where students in Mr. Daniel Tobias Flint’s U.S. History class experienced “Honoring Service: The History and Significance of Veterans Day.” Veterans featured in the Amazon Prime series BLK OPS: The Veterans History Project shared powerful stories of service, resilience, and leadership—giving students a living connection to America’s military legacy.
This work aligns directly with Florida’s bold steps to ensure students understand the full history of our nation’s warriors. House Bill 1329, passed unanimously in early 2024, mandates the teaching of veteran history.
The legislation strengthens transition assistance programs, expands support for veteran employment and small businesses, and establishes the Major John Leroy Haynes Florida Veterans’ History Program to preserve veterans’ oral histories. By requiring schools to teach the significance of Veterans Day and Memorial Day, HB 1329 ensures that future generations understand the sacrifices of those who served.
The BLKOPS Foundation is helping carry this legacy forward. Through school outreach, public programming, veteran engagement, and digital resources at blkopsfoundation.org, the foundation preserves the history of Black Seminoles, Indian Scouts, and the irregular warriors whose tactics and resilience live on in today’s Special Forces.
